Default flank

Anyone know what type of flank Matt Austin was using on the cover of Humps and Horns with his futurity bull a few issues ago? I have not been able to reach him to ask. When bucking a futurity bull what type of flank rings do professionals prefer to use to hold the pin? And what length flank would one use on futurity bulls/ and diameter? Looking for experianced opinions please. Thanks

Bob, everyone prefers something different. 3/8, 1/2",5/8" or flat. Flat stainless steel rings, round rings or different sizes or loop and leather burner. Whatever you prefer. The flank doesn't make the bull buck, the breeding does. The flank just gives them something to kick at.
You'll get 15 different opinions on what flank to use. Use what you like and if you want, try something different. There's no right answer. If you want a release device, give me a holler.

I think that's right because I've seen flank only bucking and you get the kick and extension most of the time but very seldom any air (or "rair" is what I like to call it). Has anyone ever tried dummy only bucking (without flank) and if so I wonder what result you normally get from that and whether that would be considered by most to be the animal's bucking strictly only on its genetics. I don't know, maybe all you get is rair from dummy only bucking.

I got a question about flanking I bought this bull for a practice bull when he was two the people i bought him from were really setting the flank tight and he was really draging his butt. Like he was cut in half, so I let it out and he bucks a little better has more kick then when i bought him. the question is could them cutting him in half have ruined him from really kicking

I don't know if it would ruin him but how tight you set your flank and where can make a difference in a bull. I imagine if they really cut him in half from the begining, it could ruin one. I've had some guys at my pen that have bucked their bulls with a lot of flank and none of them were worth a darn. I don't know if I'd blame it on the flanking or if the bulls just weren't any good. Probably a combonation of both.
I make a soft hand braided flank for bucking yearlings that is real easy on them. They can be made longer for big bulls too.

Was it a red flank?

It could be the one I gave him last year that I made. I haven't seen the picture.
