Had a bull calf born the other day and he's a little weak. I talked to a guy that had the same problem in some calves born this year, I guess theyre blaming it on the drought, who knows.. What can I give him to atrengthen him up some, Id hate to lose the little booger!

Thanks Nick,
I talked to a buddy that said since the drought we're very low in selenium unlike years in the past. He recommended Bo-se , does anyone know if I can give the 2 (b12 & Bo-se) together?

Hi J.D.
We had one do the same way. The little heifer couldn't stand up much less think about sucking.
If he's still weak and not sucking you need to get him to the vet because there's a body temperature of 96 to 95 where they begin going down fast. It will continue to drop so you gotta get them on fluids fast! If the calf goes down to 86 then basically you'll be looking at loosing the little guy.
If he's still not sucking load him and his mama up and head to the vet. That's the only thing that saved our Kephart/Rooster heifer.
Take care.

JD if your soil is low of selenium.. calves can develop white muscle disease. its a result of selenium deficiency in the mother at the time of birth. The cows show no signs of the defiency usually, but the calves can.. weak muscles, shakes and can die from it fast.

heres a link with more on it and treatment. You would need to have your soil and forage tested before supplementing the animals.. to much can be harmful also

Call your vet, Get a bottle of Multi-Mineral & a bottle of B12. I keep a bottle of each around all the time. It will make anything bounce back. Dont Buy the b12 complex from a feed store or Tractor supply, it aint worth nothing and doesnt work, buy the real B12 from your vet. Dennis Borba told me about the Multi-Min & I asked my vet and he ordered it for me, it will really give them a boost.
B12 & Multi-Mineral are RX drugs, perscription only.

We're low on selenium here all the time. I give Bo-Se and A and D shots to all my calves no matter what. Hope this helps, A.P.

There is also a shot you ca give the cows in their last trimester that will keep the calves healthy until after birth. It kinda gives them a jump start if your soil is deficient in Selenium and other minerials.

JD, hope your little guy is coming along. We get reconstituted colostrum into them if they don't nurse strong in the first couple of hours. Then either keep them over night if cold or they are doing poorly or turn them back to mom if that seems to get them going. You have to keep at it every 2 hours or so and work with them to teach them to take a nipple and suck.
Try resting the nipple for the bottle in the palm of your hand and using your index, middle and ring fingers as a nipple extension to tickle his palate and encourage him to latch on and suck.
If he will not suck, you'll need to put down a tube and give it that way.
We give both A-D 1/2 cc IM total, and Bo-Se at 3.75cc per 100 pounds IM, to all our newborns and repeat the Bo-Se in a month.
We also have started using the Multi Min on our mothers about 60 days before calving with good luck. We get all three from our vet but give them ourselves. She just orders them for us.

Morning JD... saw where u wrote about the tornado getting close to your place in Ohio.
We know what ya mean. The May 8th wedge tornado that was like an EF5 in Oklahoma City was headed right for our home in the city but as it crossed the south canadian river it shifted a bit east which caused it to miss us by 8 blocks - if I remember right it was like ¾ mi wide.
I'd be happy to take care of your dandy bull calf & his mama here at our farm in Norman - we've not had a tornado track thru here. Can you tell I really like 'em.
How's he doing JD?
