U.S. border open to older cattle and beef

The U.S. border opened today to all Canadian cattle born on or after March 1, 1999 and beef products from cattle of any age, despite R-CALF's motion for a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) being filed with the U.S. District Court in South Dakota late on November 16. If the TRO was accepted by the Court, it would have prevented Rule 2 from coming into effect until a hearing on R-CALF's request for a preliminary injunction could be heard.

The CCA is very pleased that the expanded list of Canadian cattle and beef eligible for export to the United States is now in effect and we look forward to further openings in the rest of the world. There is negligible risk associated with the resumption of trade for these products and this is in line with the science-based, international standards of the World Organisation for Animal Health, the OIE. The Canadian beef industry is committed to meeting the domestic and international animal health and food safety requirements. There are a number of multi-layered safeguards in place to ensure food and animal safety and Canada recently implemented an enhanced feed ban to accelerate the eradication of BSE in the Canadian herd.

The Canadian industry has been looking forward to the re-opening of the U.S. border since it was closed following the discovery of BSE in Canada four and a half years ago. It will help improve the industry's competitiveness. We hope that R-CALF will accept that this is in accordance with international science-based guidelines and will stop pursuing these frivolous and costly legal actions.

Arrangements are already underway by various exporters to begin shipping breeding cattle and other cattle born after March 1999 to the United States.

It is unclear when R-CALF's request for a preliminary injunction will be heard. The CCA will continue to monitor this and challenge any legal obstacles.

The United States Department of Agriculture has posted a memo confirming the re-opening of the border at www.aphis.usda.gov/newsroom/hot_issues/bse/index.shtml.

For more information on export requirements under Rule 2, visit the CFIA's website at www.inspection.gc.ca/english/anima/heasan/disemala/bseesb/situatione.shtml

I sent 12 bulls to the Ponoka, Alberta area this week,
it wasn't that tuff to get the paperwork done for the border crossing,
contact your Vet and they'll let you know everything needed.

What paperwork will you need to get cattle from Canada to the US? Or can our vets help with that too.

I worked with a vet in each country, and with the buyer, and all 4 of us were on the same page.

the person importing needs a import permit from that country,
and the animal needs TB, Brucellosis, Anaplasmosis, an identifying brand, and tattoo in the ear stating country of origin.
