How are the bulls Shanghai, Panama Red and Gigolo and the bulls Rough Stock, Electric Ave. (the other bull's name escapes me at the moment) deciphered genetically? They all come from the same sire and dam so wouldn't they technically be "clones" of each other? I'm not trying to get anything started here, just curious.

P.S. Remember, cloning rants=:beatdeadhorse:, so we don't want any of those.

Absolutly not , that would be like saying you and your brother are twins [no matter age difference], not even close to the same thing

the way I understand it, a clone is made from duplicating the DNA of one animal, with what your mentioning, those bulls came from the same sire and dam, but are not considered a clone, they have DNA from the sire and dam in their makeup. :)

Arthur,
They would not be clones. Both the egg and sperm cell are generated through meiosis. During meiosis, there is an exchange of genetic information. To make a really long story short, the DNA in a sperm cell is not identical to the father's DNA and the DNA in an egg is not identical to the mother's DNA due to meiosis (the millions of sperm cells are also different than each other). This is what leads to genetic diversity and why brothers don't have the same DNA. The other cells in the body are replenish through a process called mitosis. This copies the cell (and DNA) almost exactly.
Generically, in cloning, DNA from a normal cell (not sperm or egg) is inserted into an unfertilized egg where the DNA has been removed or destroyed. This results in a nearly exact copy of the animal.

Thanks for the replies. I have been wondering this for quite some time now. Let's hear it for meiosis!
