Can someone tell me what is required to haul your own cattle? I quess what I am wondering is at the weigh scales do you have to have a CDL license or anything special on your truck or trailer? Is it standard across the country or does it vary from state to state. I would be traveling from Nebraska to Texas. thanks for the help.

Steve you'll need to get a brand inspection. And go to the vet and get a health inspection. They'll call Texas and get a permit number. Texas and Ok are the two easiest places to ship cattle to so you shouldn't have any trouble there.

You are supposed to stop at the scales, especially the Port of Entry's. But heck hardly anyone does. Utah and Wyoming are by far the two you best stop at. But they are'nt on your way so you shouldn't have any problems. If you don't wanna haul them yourself David Loves putting a load togather to go there in a week or two.

Jeff,

Do you have to have a cdl to haul your own cattle. I would be driving a 1 ton pickup and horse trailer, only hauling 2 cows and a calf so weight wont be a problem.

No you don't need a CDL

Actually you are required to have a CDL if you are pulling any type of gooseneck trailer. 3 axle trailers going through TX better stop at ports down there. I've got some old fines from them for not stopping. They don't mess around.

I thought it had to be over 25000 lbs before you needed a CDL.

DEPENDS ON REGISTRED WEIGHT AND BREAKING SYSTEM ON VEHICLE. DETERMINES ON WHAT CLASS OF DL NEEDED. REFER THE FEDERAL MOTOR CARRIERS MANUEL FOR CLASSES OF VEHICLES TO DETERMINE CLASS OF DL

Troy is right, it depends on the weight of your rig. You wouldn't need one for a one ton and a gooseneck with two cows. There are some ports/scales that make all livestock stop to check paper work. Sounds like all you need now is a big bag full of money to buy fuel! :D

The weight is not what matters it is the weight your truck is tagged for if you tag commercial under 26000 with no air brakes then you do not need a cdl if you tag your truck so you can pull 26001 or more then you have to have a cdl wether you are hauling that much or not ,wether you even have your trailer or not and i believe unless they changed the law AGAIN this all only matters on a dual wheel vehicle , the troopers told may when I got all my CDL stuff if you have a single wheel 1 ton or 3/4 ton you can haul what ever you want [ how stupid is this ] and they agree they thought that was crazy also

it all depends on the DPS trooper if he is having a bad day or what
i had a la trooper eat my butt out about it saying if your paid for hauling its a commercial use of the vehicle and a log book and cdl required.
i then told him that i was hauling them to the feedlot and he said have a good day.
he also told me if you were mowing grass for money that that vehicle is a commercial vehicle and needed dot numbers i told him he was full of poop.
it was 3am in the morning on a la rural rode in northeast la so who knows
i stopped at the local troop and questioned them and they said they were really just looking at triple axle trailers so who knows i am just prepared to pay fine if i get a ticket florida is pretty bad also from reports i have received.
NOT FOR HIRE AND PERSONAL USE ARE ALL GOOD KEY WORDS TO USE IN YOUR CONVERSATION. or try to find a motorhome and parrell run beside it as you pass the scale house.

Just asked a state trooper about this, he said in some cases the limit is 10,000lbs. He said the best way to tell if you MAY need a cdl is if the vehicle you are useing as a tractor has clearance lights on the cab. he didn't have a whole lot of time to get into it. I know for sure is that I pull a 3 axle trailer and I have to use a 1ton and I have to have a cdl.

IF THAT IS THE CASE EVERYONE WITH A 1 TON DULLEY AND 3 AXELS TRAILER FALLS UNDER FEDERAL MOTOR CARRIER REGULATIONS. HAVING TO HAVE CDL, PHYSICAL, DRUG SCREEN, LOG BOOK, FEDERAL MOTOR CARRIER INSPECTION ON TRUCK AND TRAILER ,ICC AUTHURTY, RAILROAD COMMISSION, THAT IS JUST A FEW OF THE REGULATIONS I KNOW THEY ARE MORE

I believe it has to do if you're for hire or not. If you're vehicle states not for hire and you hauling for yourself you don't need to have your own authority, icc numbers, etc. But you do have to have a CDL if your vehicle in combination ( registered ) is 26000 or greater. This is how alot of guys running hot shot get into trouble cuz they have no authority and do haul commercial, everythings fine til they get stopped and they check papers.

This is somewhat related to topic, but I have a question about hauling.

If your hauling say 4 or 5 aniamls , using your truck and trailer, do you need special insurance or do you tell your insurance co. your hauling the animals?

I was wondering, if you were in an accident, would your insurance be voided if you have not told them your hauling etc. And if your hauling someone elses animals and you had an accident , how does that affect you . thanks Marcia

Bryon, I'm the same way. I drove the motorcycle to work the other day and was thinking about that. I figure if they stop me I'll tell them that it says right in thier book that with a CDL you can opperate a lower class of vehicle and a motorcycle has to be a lower class. You think they'll buy that?

If I remember correctly with our insurence you can insure up to so much cargo(live or not). I think we have $20,000 on our 3 horse.

I have everything but haz mat and there are several grey areas on this the ladys at the tag office will tell you one thing and a cop will tell you something else , I have been told [as stated earlier in this post by some one else ] if you get paid for it you ARE commercial and must have a cdl contracters usually tag there semis farm but they are hauling to a rodeo if they catch they wrong trooper ther are in trouble besides farm tags are only good within [i think 150 miles as the crow flies from your house] you probably will have no problems but if you are thinking of doing it as a proffession I would contact you highway patrol or check with someone who does it for a living such as Troy I am sure he has checked into all of this ,it can be different for each cituaition such as haveing to have authorites [ interstate or intrastate] and ICC and DOT numbers

I also have a CLass A CDL with all endorsments, includeing Hazmat.

Marcia, we carry a full coverage on the trucks and trailers, I can't remember all the specifics but there is somewhere around a half million dollars worth or more of cargo. We have it as a blanket on all our trucks and trailers, including pickup and trailers. Regardless if you was hauling for someone else or not. anything in a full coverage trailer and truck should be covered by the insurance. It is on mine anyway. I'm sure other insurances may be different so with that in mind I would ask them to be sure.

I have a CDL and carry cargo insurance when hauling other people's animals.
26,000# and above you should have a CDL, each state is different.
I've had the cops after me in about 15 states for driving a Dodge dually and a 34' trailer, I've avoided some speeding tickets because I do have a CDL and I wear my seatbelt, I also make sure I have Health Permits/Papers for the states where the animals are headed and Brand papers where needed, I've had cops ask me some stupid ?'s like "what are you doing in TX, you're from ND ?" lol so I ask them "why are you pulling me over for 5mph over the speed limit?"
:nana:

I know that MN requires you have a CDL if you are pulling a 26,000#+ load, I just talked to a guy today about his $350 fine for hauling 7 horses without a CDL!!!

dang i sure have been lucky then, cause i have hauled horses and cattle from the rio grande to so close to canadian border you could see it, and never had any problems! was chased down in nebraska once for not stopping at a port of entry, but soon sent on my way after telling him i never seen the place. i also had to go into the long story about how oklahoma law does not require us to have a tag on a farm trailer. he informed me i was not in okla. anymore, so i informed him i wasn't in nebraska for much longer before i headed back and i hoped not every out of stater had to put up with this crap! was lucky to have some health papers with me even though they matched nothing i was hauling. have bought me a farm trlr tag for my trls now just so they do not stop me to ask about the tag missing? if it was my pickup and my trailer, and my cattle! i wouldn't worry about what license i had! unless, your planning on drinkin and drivin, then your better off with no license at all!
